New England has yet to secure the top seed in the AFC, but it can move painfully close to it with a win over AFC East rival Miami on Saturday. The two longtime enemies are scheduled to butt heads at 1:00pm ET at Gillette Stadium on Christmas Eve; the game will be broadcast live on CBS. NFL odds makers have the Patriots, a 38-24 winner over Miami earlier this season, listed as a -10 against the spread home favorite. Miami’s solid stretch run continued last weekend with a 30-23 road win over the Buffalo Bills. The victory marked the Dolphins fifth win in their last seven games and it served as their second win over their AFC East rival.
Miami, operating under the direction of interim head coach Todd Bowles, who took over for the fired Tony Sparano, posted 448 yards in the win, despite turning the ball over three times. Running back Reggie Bush was the impetus behind the offensive explosion as he rushed for a career high 203 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Matt Moore also turned in a solid outing, throwing for 217 yards and two touchdowns.
The Dolphins 15th ranked defense (339.1 yards per game allowed) did not have one of its best afternoon’s from a yards allowed standpoint (404); however, they made up for that blemish by recording three interceptions, three sacks, and eight quarterback hits. Miami also held Buffalo to 0-for-11 on third down.
The Fins challenge will be much greater this weekend with the 11-3 Patriots on deck. New England prevailed easily in its much ballyhooed meeting with Denver last Sunday, beating the Broncos 41-23 at Mile High Stadium.
Tom Brady, who threw for 517 yards and four touchdowns in New England’s season opening win over Miami, completed 23-of-34 passes for 320 yards and two scores opposite Denver’s much improved defense. The Pats porous defense gave up 194 yards through air and 93 yards on the ground to Tim Tebow, but, per usual, they were opportunistic, forcing three Bronco fumbles.
New England has won five of the last six in this series, but the Dolphins have managed to record two wins in their last six visits to Gillette Stadium. A Miami upset seems unlikely on Saturday, but the way Bush and company have performed of late, a cover seems plausible.
NFL Picks Betting Trend: The Under is 8-2 in the Patriots last 10 games as a home favorite versus an AFC East team with spread between 8 and 10.5.
