The red hot Chargers are in Motown this weekend as they look to keep things rolling against the 9-5 Lions. Tomorrow’s Christmas Eve scuffle between the two teams is scheduled to kickoff at 4:05pm ET at Ford Field (CBS). Despite San Diego’s strong late push, Detroit comes into this game a -3 against the spread home favorite; the game total is set at 52.5 points. Okay, who didn’t see this coming? San Diego with a big December push, what a ridiculous thought. While the Chargers have been a strong finisher under head coach Norv Turner, that prospect seemed completely unrealistic just a few weeks ago. In other words, it actually appeared as though the Chargers were what they were…a bad team.
Prior to a December 5th Monday night meeting with the Jaguars in Jacksonville, San Diego had lost six straight games. While the Chargers were competitive in most of those setbacks, they demonstrated almost no ability to get over the hump late in games. Most of the blame could be pinned on quarterback Philip Rivers, who did not seem himself, even during the team’s 4-1 start.
Rivers threw 10 interceptions during the Chargers six game skid and completed a lackluster 56.6 percent of his passes. He has since regained his form, though, and the scoreboard has been indicative of his reversal. The NC State product has thrown seven touchdowns to zero interceptions in San Diego’s last three games, all wins, and he compiled a 132.2 passer rating in those three games.
Rivers will need to continue his late season surge if San Diego is to get by the Lions in Detroit. Jim Schwartz’ club has certainly experienced its share of ups and downs, but, for the most part, it has been explosive at Ford Field. The Lions, who are averaging 28.2 points and 380.1 yards per game, scored 48, 24, 49, and 34 points in their four home wins.
NFL Predictions Betting Odds: The Chargers are 2-6 straight up and against the spread as a road dog with a total between 51.5 and 54.
