North Carolina State manufactured its first
winning season under Head Coach Tom O'Brien this year, going 8-4 to finish third in the ACC's Atlantic Division. The Wolfpack jumped out to a 4-0, disposing for non-conference foes Western Carolina, Central Florida and Cincinnati before routing defending ACC Champion Georgia Tech 45-28 in Atlanta for its first conference win.
NC State went 4-4 from that point, but it did close out the regular season by winning two of its last three games (Wake Forest 38-3, North Carolina 29-25).
Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson led his team to a 32.6 point per game average, the school's highest mark since 2003, after throwing for 3288 yards and 26 touchdowns. Wilson also rushed for 394 yards and nine touchdowns.
North Carolina State is 1-1 in its last two bowl contests; the Wolfpack won the 2005 Car Care Bowl 14-0 over South Florida but lost the 2008 Papajohns.com Bowl 23-29 to Rutgers.
West Virginia recorded nine wins for a third straight season under Head Coach Bill Stewart, finishing the season with a 9-3 record. The Mountaineers (5-2 Big East) placed second in the Big East, though, thanks to a 16-13 overtime loss at Connecticut on October 29th.
West Virginia, which is led on offense by sophomore quarterback Geno Smith and senior running back Noel Devine, averaged just 26.7 points per game this season (65th in the FBS). However, the Mountaineers defense once again ranked among the nation's best, limiting opponents to an average of 12.8 points and 251 yards per contest (second and third nationally respectively).
