The 2010 Insight Bowl will take place tonight at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. The game features a battle between the Big 12's Missouri Tigers and the Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes. Kickoff in this evening's postseason clash is set for 10:00pm ET on ESPN. 2010 Insight Bowl Odds have Mizzou listed as a -2.5 against the spread favorite and the Over/Under set at 46.5.
Tonight's Insight Bowl could be classified
as the overachievers versus the underachievers with the 12th ranked Missouri Tigers squaring off against the 7-5 Iowa Hawkeyes. That may not be a fair characterization of the Tigers, though, which came into the season with a legitimate opportunity to win the Big 12 North.
The underachiever moniker is more than apt in the case of the Hawkeyes, though. Iowa was expected to contend for the Big Ten title, but finished the season by losing four of its last six games, including a 27-24 loss to 3-9 Minnesota. The Hawkeyes poor stretch run resulted in a 4-4 conference record.
Iowa, which will be without two of its biggest offensive weapons tonight (RB Adam Robinson, WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos), can gain a certain measure of redemption with a win over Missouri. The Hawkeyes routinely battle their non-conference neighbor for recruits in the St. Louis area, and they could, potentially, influence some out of state talent by dispatching the Tigers this evening.
Missouri recorded its third double digit win season in the last four years with an impressive 10-2 run. The Tigers finished second in the Big 12 North after posting a 6-2 conference record, with its only losses coming at Nebraska and at Texas Tech.
Missouri, which ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense (15.2 points per game allowed), closed out the regular season with three straight wins, including a 35-7 pasting of Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in the finale.
The Tigers are 3-2 under Head Coach Gary Pinkel in bowl play, but they did lose to Navy in embarrassing fashion in last year's Texas Bowl, falling 13-35 to the Midshipmen.
Iowa, which is 5-3 under Kirk Ferentz in postseason action, comes into tonight's game riding a two bowl win streak. The Hawkeyes pounded South Carolina 31-10 in the 2008 Outback Bowl and they beat Georgia Tech 24-14 in last year's Orange Bowl.
2010 Insight Bowl Betting Trend: The Tigers are 5-2 straight up and against the spread over the last five years playing as a favorite with a total between 44.5 and 47.
2010 Insight Bowl Missouri vs Iowa Odds:
Missouri Tigers -2.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110)
Iowa Hawkeyes +2.5 (-110), Under 46.5 (-110)
