The Hyundai Sun Bowl, that kicks off Saturday (2:00 pm ET) at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, has put together a great looking matchup of schools from opposite sides of the country. Georgia Tech (8-4), a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference will play the Utah Utes (7-5), who are wrapping up their first year as members of the Pac-12 Conference.
Oddsmakers at BetOnline.com list the Yellow Jackets as 2 1/2 chalk College Football Odds favorites versus the Utes with a combined score total (over/under) of 50. Utah backers are getting +110 odds on the offshore money line while the price of a SU GT win is -130.
The Yellow Jackets, who employ a potent triple option running game operated by QB Tevin Washington, will be a real challenge for the Utah defense. The offense has eight one-play TD drives this season after producing none in 2010. RB Embry Peeples is 24 yards short of 1,000 for his career; he would be the fourth current Jacket to reach that mark, joining Roddy Jones (1,826) and Orwin Smith (1,158) and QB Washington (1,444).
The Utes know how to win bowl games, currently on a run of nine straight wins. That’s the second longest streak in history. The Utes will present problems for the Yellow Jackets because of their 7th ranked rushing defense, permitting only 97 yards per game. The leaders of that defensive group are DE Derrick Shelby and DT Star Lotulelei, bowh of whom are first-team All Pac-12 selections. Utah is making its 10th postseason trip in the past 11 years. The Utes are 110th nationally in total offense, the lowest standing of any bowl team, but 29th in total defense.
Game Pick: Georgia Tech is more balanced on both sides of the ball where Utah is limited offensively but very good on defense. I believe the Yellow Jackets will find a way to penetrate that good Utah defense. My Pick – Georgia Tech -2 1/2.
