2009 NFL Draft: Will Lions 1st Pick Be QB Matthew Stafford?

2009 NFL Draft: Those who bet NFL games love a loser. And the Detroit Lions have become a favorite betting destination for sports gamblers for just that reason. Of course gamblers love a winner too. What gamblers  really like is consistency. A team that loses or wins consistantly enough that it pays well at the sportsbook. Due to the Lions awfulness; the team will attempt to begin the long climb to respectability through the 2009 NFL Draft. However, drafting well is easier said than done, something the Lions should know plenty about.

The Lions own the top pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and by the time the clock starts ticking on Draft Day, the team had better have its top pick signed and in the fold or traded away for multiple picks. At Sports-Odds.com we are getting the idea that Detroit will go with a quarterback; most notably Matthew Stafford [pictured]of the University of Georgia.

The quarterback is the most important position on the field and new Lions Coach Jim Schwartz needs that franchise guy for all to rally around. Will Stafford be that guy? Will Stafford do for Detroit like Peyton Manning has done for Indianapolis? We know if Detroit fails with this top pick the reign of new General Manager Martin Mayhew and Schwartz will be short lived.

At least the number one overall pick isn't the only premium selections the Lions have. Detroit owns the 20th pick in the first round and 33rd overall pick in the second round. It's most likely Detroit will use these selections to bolster their offensive line.
