New York Yankees to Acquire Ben Sheets and Juan Cruz?: This offseason the New York Yankees attempted to fill all the voids left by the retirement of Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Carl Pavano, and the many more lost due to free agency. Thus far, the Yankees have signed two starters in (LHP) CC Sabathia, (RHP) AJ Burnett, a first baseman in (1B) Mark Teixeira, and outfielders Nick Swisher, and most recently Xavier Nady. But if you think the Yanks spending spree ends there, think again.
Various reports are now indicating that the Bronx Bombers are looking to acquire free agent starter, (RHP) Ben Sheets, as well as set up man Juan Cruz, if the prices are right.
This would certainly improve the Yankees’ already impressive odds for this upcoming season. At SportsBook.com, the New York Yankees currently have the best Sports Odds to win the 2009 World Series at +250.
According to a report, “Both Sheets and Cruz are Type A free agents who were offered salary arbitration, but they would cost the Yankees only fourth- and fifth-round draft picks.” The Yanks are trying to counter the Red Sox’s signings of John Smoltz and Bread Penny, by acquiring Sheets and Cruz at an affordable price. The Boston Red Sox Sports Odds of winning the 2009 World Series are currently fourth best in baseball, at +800.
According to another source, the Yankees' priority remains the free-agent signing of (LHP) Andy Pettitte. Pettitte, who rejected New York’s offer of a 1-year, $10 million contract, appears to have no other offers on the table at this time. “At the moment, the Yankees are committed to paying $187.975 million to 17 players, according to salary information compiled from the Cot's Baseball Contracts web site.”
