The details of the Braves’ offer remains unknown, but is believed to be a one-year contract. His agent, Scott Boras has publicly stated that he seeks a 2-year deal for Damon. The 36-year-old lefty hit .286 with 24 home runs for the Bronx Bombers during their championship run. Damon, who batted second in the Yanks’ stacked lineup, is likely to return to his natural leadoff spot should he sign with Atlanta.
If so, Damon would join former New York outfielder and switch-hitter Melky Cabrera, who was recently part of the deal that sent RHP Javier Vasquez to the Big Apple. The Braves are also planning on giving 20-year-old hot-prospect Jason Heyward a crack at a starting right field job this season.
“Well, there’s no reason not to give him a crack at making it,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said of the 6-foot-4, 225-pound outfielder. “If he is too young, that’s fine, too. He can spend some time in Triple-A. But if we think he’s ready and he can help us, then let’s go.”
