New York Mets NL East Preview

by Abe Luciano on Thursday, March 6th, 2008

The NY Mets finished their season in complete free-fall blowing a 7 game lead with 17 games left to finish in second place in the NL East. But heading into their last season at Shea Stadium, the Mets are the odds on favorite to win the division. Sportsbetting has the NY Mets as 5-1 MLB betting odds to win the World Series.

The Mets iffy pitching staff landed the biggest fish in free-agency by signing a legitimate staff ace in Johan Santana. Santana will be joined by solid veterans Pedro Martinez, John Main and Oliver Perez who are all quality MLB starters. The bullpen is shaky with closer Billy Wagner not what he once was, and the rest of the pen being suspect at best. Catching shouldn’t be a problem however, with top-notch defensive receiver Brian Schneider handling the staff. Sportsbetting has the New York Mets as 2-1 MLB betting odds to win the NL Pennant.

New York Mets NL East PreviewThe Mets have firepower in their lineup but durability could be a major concern with creaky vets Carlos Delgado, Moises Alou and Luis Castillo. All three are still solid ballplayers but getting 100 games out of each is about all you can expect. In their primes however are elite players like David Wright, Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran who give NY muscle to put runs on the board. Wright is especially dangerous with the bat coming off an MVP like year that saw him hit .325 with 30 HR’s and 107 RBI’s. Sportsbetting has the NY Mets 2-5 odds to win the NL East Pennant.

If the Mets stay reasonably healthy and the pitching lives up to expectations NY is the team to beat and could easily improve on last year's 88-74 record.
