In the National League East, the Atlanta Braves will resume their rivalry with the revamped New York Mets. BetOnline.com has the Atlanta Braves -130 favorites against the New York Mets +120 with the over/under set at 8.5 runs.
John Maine will make his first start of the season for the Mets, and he will try to make amends for his part in New York's historic collapse. Maine finished the season with a 15-10 record and an ERA of 3.91, which is respectable, but not when you take his second-half numbers into account. After the break, Maine was 5-6 with an inflated ERA of 5.53, and his opposition batting average spiked from .214 to .261.
The fifth-year right-hander was 1-1 with an ERA of 3.93 in three starts against the Braves, who will counter with Tim Hudson. Heading into his tenth season, Hudson went 16-10 last season with an ERA of 3.33, but he started this season with a no-decision in the Braves' season-opening loss at Washington. Hudson gave up two runs on three hits over seven innings, which is a very promising beginning for both Hudson and the Braves, despite their loss. Hudson was 2-2 in four starts with an ERA of 3.33 against the Mets last season.
Each team won nine of their 18 meetings last year, with the Mets taking two of three in the final series. But the Braves are perennially strong at home, so expect Atlanta to take the first game of their weekend set with the Mets. Get your Free MLB Pick in Now!
