Two opening day starters will matchup in Detroit on Sunday night as Mark Buehrle and the Chicago White Sox face Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers.  Buehrle did not pitch well in the opener as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in the second inning against Cleveland on Monday. Justin Verlander was a little better than Buehrle on opening day for the Tigers but he still didn’t pitch that well allowing four earned runs on four hits in six innings against Kansas City.

The White Sox have had a lot of success in recent seasons against Detroit.  They have won the season series in eight of the past nine seasons. The only time the Tigers ended up on top was in 2004 when Detroit won the season series 11 games to 8. "I have no idea why that is," Buehrle said, "It's one of those things where we've got their number." Third baseman Joe Crede has had good success against Detroit at Comerica Park where he has hit 15 career home runs. "We've had a good record against them in the past," said Crede, "I don't see why this can't continue this year with the team we have."

Tigers’ relievers Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney will be out of action for the series.  Detroit will also be without one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball as Curtis Granderson is out with a broken bone in his right hand. “I feel bad because he's a great kid and you don't want anybody to get hurt," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, "But that's part of the game. That's nothing that has anything to do with us. They have a great lineup and they will cover it up." The Tigers definitely missed Granderson in their season opening series against the Royals when they were shockingly swept by Kansas City.

The Tigers definitely were not prepared in their opening series against Kansas City and it may serve as a wake up call for them. "We have a target on us," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "We'll find out how good we are. We'll find out if we're tough enough…I don't mind getting beaten in three games, but I'm very disappointed in the toughness and the grinding-out that this club's supposed to have. So we'll find out."

One betting stat of note has White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle with a career record of 12-8 record against Detroit and a 6-5 record at Comerica Park.
