Boston Red Sox Josh Beckett Suspended 6 Games: The No.1 pitcher in the Boston Red Sox rotation, RHP Josh Beckett (1-1, 3.46 ERA, 5 BB, 15 K) has been issued a 6-game suspension and fined by Major League Baseball after intentionally throwing a pitch near the head of former New York Yankees outfielder and now LA Angel, Bobby Abreu.
The sanctions were announced Tuesday afternoon, after the commissioner’s office determined that the hard-throwing right-hander’s action last week were indeed premeditated.
Beckett also was cited for "aggressive actions" after the pitch that led to the benches clearing, this according to the vice president for discipline in the commissioner's office, Bob Watson.
Tonight, the (2-5) Boston Red Sox continue their West Coast swing, which hasn’t exactly gotten off to an ideal start, currently just 1-3. At SBGglobal.com, the Boston Red Sox [-138 ML] have been listed as the Sports Odds favorites to win tonight’s Game 2 against the hosting Oakland Athletics [+138 ML], who lead the series 1-0.
If Beckett decides to appeal the decision, any penalties would be delayed until after a hearing, and he would be allowed to make his next start. Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was also suspended (one game) and fined. Furthermore, Watson also issued a fine to Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia and players Torii Hunter and Justin Speier. The OVER/UNDER for tonight’s Boston Red Sox at Oakland A’s Game 2 has been set at a combined total of 8 runs.
