Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Houston Astros: MLB Predictions

by Reno Gold on Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

MLB Predictions: Going into the season we, here around the office, thought the Los Angeles Dodgers might win about 87 games and squeak by in the National League West Division. Scratch that thought. If the Dodgers keep up the pace, and they are looking awfully good, might win 95 or better games and run away with the NL West. Going into Tuesday night's game at Houston, the Dodgers own a 10-3 record, are undefeated (6-0) at home and are currently enjoying an eight-game winning streak. That's not good news for the Astro's whom seem undermanned with a weak pitching staff and are holding down the bottom of the NL Central.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Houston Astros: MLB PredictionsFor Game-One The Dodgers will pin their hopes on the pitching of lefthander Clayton Kershaw in this game. Kershaw has a 0-0 record and a 1.50 ERA this season. The Astros will counter Kershaw with Russ Ortiz. Righthander Ortiz has a 5.78 ERA to go along with a 0-0 record this season.

His last time out, Kershaw pitched a no-decision against San Francisco, allowing only one hit and one run over seven innings with 13 strikeouts. The bullpen let the team down giving up the lead late in the game following Kershaw's exit.

Ortiz had his longest performance so far this year in his last outing vs. the Pirates, allowing three runs over 4 2/3 innings in an Astros win. He still seeks his first win of the season and will do so against the Dodgers, whom he's faced plenty of times in his career. The former Giant has made 22 appearances vs. the Dodgers, including 21 starts. He has a record of 8-9 and a 5.07 ERA, with 57 walks and 76 strikeouts.

The Dodgers blasted Colorado 14-2 as a -120 favorite on Sunday. The 16 runs scored went OVER the posted over/under total (9). Matt Kemp homered twice and drove in five runs for the Dodgers, while Orlando Hudson was 3-4 with three RBI in the win.

Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee hit back-to-back jacks for Houston in its 4-3 loss to Cincinnati on Monday night. Cincinnati cashed as +125 road underdogs as the teams played under the 8-run total set by oddsmakers.

MLB Predictions: We like this pitching duel..play the UNDER 9 1/2.
