"The biggest thing was, [I] had to battle out there," Guthrie said after allowing just 1 ER in his over 6 2/3 innings of work his last time out. "But fortunately, [I] kept us in the game. We had a nice opportunity to win."
But against Boston, Guthrie hasn't been particularly that sharp, which is indicated by his 1-5 record and his 4.74 ERA versus their division foes. The OVER/UNDER for the Orioles vs Red Sox in Game 1 is set at a combined total of 8½ runs scored.
Opposing him tonight for the Red Sox will be another guy that has had bad luck to start the season. Pitching for Terry Francona tonight will be a guy that is notorious for being a slow starter, as LHP Jon Lester (0-2, 8.44 ERA) takes the ball for Boston in the opener. Despite never having loss a game against Baltimore throughout his career (10-0, 2.39 ERA), Lester is just 2-6 in the months of March and April, with an ERA of 5.46.
"I just have to be better," Lester said. "That's all I know. I have to be better, and it's unacceptable. I'm letting the rotation down. I'm letting the bullpen down.
"Most importantly, I'm letting the team down with how I'm throwing the ball right now. I need to pick it up and kick myself in the [butt]. I don't know what else I need to do, but I'm going to figure it out and everything's going to ride on from there."
