After handing the Yankees their first sweep of the season, Jim Leyland and the Detroit Tigers return to East 161 Street & River Avenue in the Bronx, NY for some more. As the (18-18) New York Yankees host their American League archrivals, the (15-21) Detroit Tigers, in the opener of a 3 game weekend set from the Stadium. BodogLife.com has the road team the Detroit Tigers a -135 favorite against the home New York Yankees (+115) with the O/U set at 10. New York is coming off a 1-2 series loss to the Indians. The only game of that series they won, was the Thursday matinee. The Yankees were indeed the Bronx Bombers yesterday afternoon, as their bats came to life. It became almost a preview of this year’s All-Star Home Run Derby in the Bronx. Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, and Wilson Betemit, all went yard in yesterday’s 6-3 win, helping Mike Mussina earn his 5th victory of the season. The “Moose-man” has now won 4 straight starts dating back to April 23rd when NY defeated the Chi-Town White Sox. With Phil Hughes on the DL, and Ian Kennedy back in the minors, Joe Girardi will give the ball to the Japanses LHP Kei Igawa (in his first MLB start this season). Kei Igawa was brought from Japan with great expectations in 2007, but with minimal results (2-3, 6.25 ERA). He has been pitching in the Yankees minor league system for some time now. So far, the left-hander has had a lot of difficulties readjusting his game to the American style of pitching; mostly keeping the ball down (in the strike zone). Coaches in the NYY's farm system, continue to work with him on a day-to-day basis to improve his (pitching) mechanics. So far in the minors, Kei Igawa has a record of 3-3 this season. Tonight however, he gets a second chance to show he has improved, and gets a second opportunity to show he was a good investment. And what a test this will be, against a very potent Detroit Tiger’s lineup. Igawa’s counterpart tonight will be the veteran LHP Kenny Rogers (2-3, 6.27 ERA, 19 Ks).
