New York and Los Angeles, after a Thursday of rest, kick start a three game series in Anaheim tonight. For the Angels, losers of two straight, this evening's contest represents the start of a nine game home stand. The Yankees, meanwhile, conclude their nine game western road swing this weekend before heading home to face the Red Sox, Indians, and Rangers. The latest Sports Betting Odds have Los Angeles listed as a -155 moneyline favorite this evening's series opener; the game total is set at 7.5 with both the Over and Under drawing -110 odds.
New York, which at 31-23 holds a two
game lead over the Red Sox in the American League East, comes into tonight's showdown with the Angels riding a four game win streak. The Yankees, surprisingly, dropped the first two games of their current road trip to Seattle, but they responded by beating the Mariners in the series finale before going on to sweep the Athletics.
New York has scored a total of 26 runs in its last four games (6.5 rpg) while holding its opposition to mere six (1.5 rpg).
The Yankees may find that pace difficult to maintain this evening with Jered Weaver toeing the rubber for the Angels. Weaver, who is 6-4 with a 2.10 ERA, has allowed two or fewer earned runs in eight of his 12 starts this season. The 28 year old right hander has also allowed just 61 hits while striking out 77 in 85.2 innings of work.
Weaver recorded his third complete game of the season on Saturday, allowing just two hits and zero earned runs in a 0-1 L.A. loss at Minnesota.
Despite his dominance, the Angels, which stand at 29-29 after losing back to back games at Kansas City earlier this week, won just one of Weaver's six May starts. Los Angeles averaged a paltry 2.2 runs per game in support of the Long Beach State product last month.
New York will counter Weaver with 24 year old Dominican native Ivan Nova. Nova, who will be making his 11th start of the season tonight, is 4-3 with a 4.67 ERA. The right hander has labored of late, giving up 12 earned runs and 30 hits in his last four starts; he averaged just 4 1/3 innings in that stretch.
This weekend marks the first meeting of the season between these two clubs. Last year each squad came away with four wins in their eight get togethers.
