The Yankees continue their National League Central road swing this evening as they open at three game set with the Reds in Cincinnati. New York, which is fresh off a 2-1 series win over the Cubs, will send 24 year old Ivan Nova to the hill tonight. Nova will be countered by fellow Dominican Johnny Cueto. This evening's game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM ET start at Great American Ball Park; it will be broadcast live on ESPN. Sports Betting Odds have the Reds and the Over Nine listed as -125 and -120 moneyline favorites respectively.
New York recovered from its 3-1 series
opening loss to the Cubs with a narrow 4-3 victory on Saturday, but it left no room for doubt in yesterday's rubber match. The Yankees trailed 4-1 early, but they tied the ball game in the top of the sixth before going on to score six runs in the final two frames of the 10-4 shellacking.
New York had 13 hits in the win as three players, Brett Gardner, Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher, all came up with three hit games. Rodriguez, who is batting .289 on the season, also had three runs while Swisher came up with three RBI thanks to an 8th inning home run off of reliever Chris Carpenter.
The triumph helped the Yankees procure their third consecutive series win and it also improved their record to 41-29, leaving them still a game and a half back of the first place Red Sox in the AL East.
Cincinnati brought its record to 38-35 yesterday afternoon as it narrowly avoided a sweep at the hands of the visiting Blue Jays. The Reds, which fell to Toronto 2-3 and 4-0 in games one and two, came away with a 2-1 win after Miguel Cairo hit a two run homer in the bottom of the sixth to end the Jays 1-0 lead.
Bronson Arroyo was masterful in earning his sixth win of the season, giving up just five hits and one earned run over eight innings.
Johnny Cueto will look to duplicate his rotation mate's performance tonight as he chases his fifth victory. Cueto, who sports a 1.68 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, has allowed nine hits and no earned runs in his last 14 innings of work (two starts); he has struck out 13 while walking three in the same number of frames.
Ivan Nova, who is making his 14th start of the season, is coming off a lackluster performance against the Rangers, one in which he yielded seven hits and four earned runs over five innings. Despite the rough showing, New York won the game 12-4 to give the young right hander his sixth win of the season.
Nova's ERA, thanks to the Texas' game, currently stands at 4.46, but his road ERA is a more impressive 3.95
