MLB All-Star Betting Odds Preview

The National League visits Yankee Stadium to face the American League for the 79th Midsummer Classic and the posted odds have the AL as a -140 favorite

National League at American League – 8:00 PM ET

Even though these two teams are supposed to be evenly matched, this battle has been as one-sided as the Paris Hilton-Nicole Ritchie rivalry.

The National League has been Nicole Ritchie-thin in the win column of late. They haven't one once in the last 11 years. They have come close in the last five meetings, losing by an average of two runs per game and even tied the AL in 2002, but haven't won since 1996. Overall, the AL is 40-36-2 in this series. MLB All-Star Betting Odds Preview

In the past, this rivalry has been all about the streaks. The AL won seven of eight from 1941, then the NL won 22 of the following 24 games. The AL won six straight from 1988 to 1993 and now is on the 10-0-1 streak.

The NL appears to have the better hitting roster this year. Six of the top 11 league leaders in home runs are on the NL roster as well as the top four league leaders in average. But pitching might be a factor as there is some uncertainty about the availability of Tim Lincecum and Brandon Webb both pitched Sunday and Edinson Volquez threw 114 pitches on Saturday. Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker called the National League's manager Clint Hurdle and asked him not to pick Volquez as the starter.

The over/under for the contest is set at 10 . Interestingly enough, if you were to graph the average score of the All-Star game from 1930 to the modern day, the graph would be inclined upward and growing.

In the 1930's, the two teams averaged 7.9 runs per game. In the 1970's, the two teams averaged 9.5 runs per game. Since the turn of the millennium, the average runs scored in the All-Star game has been 10 with four double-digit contests.

Give the way the streaks run in this series, the American League is a decent pick at -140. And considering these two teams have averaged 10 runs since 2000, the over is worth a play.

Pick: Over
