p>Phillies vs Cardinals:The Philadelphia Phillies [+131] will try to regroup against a red-hot St. Louis Cardinals [-141] team, on Wednesday night at 8:15 PM ET (10:15PM PT) from Busch Stadium. The Cardinals must feel on top of the world as they are enjoying what could turn in their longest winning streak in about six years. They are also at the top of their NL Central division, while the Phillies are just trying to get a win on the road.
Philadelphia has lost three consecutive games, and manager Charlie Manuel is trying his best to keep his team positive.
"We're positive, but it's hard to keep a lot of spirit," Manuel said. "It seems like we're always behind in the game, and we always have to try to come back. Every time we get somebody on base, I know that we're trying too hard to knock them in."
The Phillies are currently 1-5 on their eight-game road trip, and are seven games out in the NL East. On Tuesday, they not only lost to the Cardinals 7-1 , but they lost starting pitcher Jamie Moyer after the first inning due to a left elbow strain.
The Cardinals on the other hand are enjoying their success. “The pitching’s been great and we’ve able to score some runs, so it’s a good formula to win,” said Cardinal’s left-fielder Matt Holliday.
St. Louis will start off with rookie Jaime Garcia on Wednesday night. Garcia is 8-4 and has a 2.27 ERA. On Friday he pitched his second shortest start of the season lasting 3 1-3 innings and throwing 82 pitches, giving up two runs and eight hits.
Philadelphia will send right-hander Joe Blanton (3-5 6.21 ERA) to the mound. Blanton did not receive a decision on his last start on Friday against the Cubs, after a season high of eight strikeouts.
