The Orioles will go for the sweep of American League East leader New York this afternoon in a game three getaway day contest at Yankee Stadium. Today’s series finale between the two division rivals is scheduled to get underway at 1:05pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on the MLB Network. The latest MLB Odds have the hosting Yankees listed as a -185 moneyline favorite while Baltimore is getting +175 odds to complete the sweep. The Over/Under in today’s game is set at 10 runs; the Over is favored at -115 odds.
Baltimore extended its current win streak to three games last night with an 11-5 game two thrashing of the Yankees. The victory improved the Orioles record to 55-49 and left them 5.5 games back of New York in the AL East standings.
The O’s can close that gap even further today but handing the Yankees their fifth consecutive loss. Baltimore will call on injury plagued lefty Zach Britton to get them over the hump and out of town with a victory this afternoon.
Britton, a 24 year old out of California, is making just his fourth start of the season; he spent the first half of the year dealing with shoulder problems. Britton is 1-0 with a 5.74 ERA in three previous appearances. He turned in a wonderful performance opposite Cleveland on July 22nd, which served as a nice bounce back from his season debut against the Twins (six hits, four earned runs over four innings). Britton held the Indians to four hits and no earned runs over six innings in a 4-3 Baltimore victory. Unfortunately for Britton, he fell apart last Friday against Oakland, giving up six hits and six earned runs over 5.2 innings.
New York will counter Britton with 26 year old righty Phil Hughes. Hughes brings a 10-8 record and 4.08 ERA to the hill today; however, while those numbers are modest, he has been much more consistent of late. The five year veteran has earned a quality start in eight of his last 10 appearances, helping the Yankees to a 7-3 record. Hughes, who is 7-3 with a 3.93 ERA in 11 starts at Yankee Stadium this season, owns a 4-3 record and 5.34 ERA in 14 showings (11 starts) against the Orioles.
MLB Odds Betting Trend: The Orioles are 7-3 in their last 10 games as a road underdog with a total between 9.5 and 10 runs.
