MLB Odds 2012 New York Yankees vs Detroit Tigers

by Matt Foust on Monday, August 6th, 2012

tigers miguel cabreraThe Tigers effort to reel in AL Central leader Chicago continues tonight as they open a four game set with the New York Yankees. This evening’s game one clash between Detroit and New York is scheduled to get underway at 7:00pm ET at Comerica Park; it will be broadcast live on ESPN. MLB Odds have the hosting Tigers listed as a heavy -170 favorite while the Bronx Bombers are drawing +150 odds to win tonight’s opener. This evening’s game total is set at eight runs.

The Tigers won their fourth straight game yesterday, taking the finale in their three game home set with the Indians 10-8 after Miguel Cabrera hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning. The dramatic victory improved the team’s record to 58-50 and left it a 1.5 games back of the White Sox in the American League Central.

Detroit will shoot for its fifth win in a row tonight with reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander on the hill. Verlander is in the midst of another terrific campaign as he enters this evening’s start with an 11-7 record and 2.63 ERA; however, he has taken the loss in his last two starts, yielding 14 hits and seven earned runs in road outings against Cleveland and Boston.

Verlander figures to turn things around tonight, though, even against the hard hitting Yankees. The seven year veteran is 5-2 with a 1.68 ERA and .168 batting average against in nine home starts (Tigers are 6-3 in those games).

New York, which at 63-44 owns a 6.5 game lead over the second place Orioles in the AL East, will counter Verlander with second year pro Ivan Nova. The Dominican native is an impressive 10-5 on the season, but his ERA (4.53) and WHIP (1.44) are mediocre at best. Nova did neither of those numbers any favors his last time out, giving up 10 hits and nine earned runs over five innings in a 5-11 home loss to Baltimore. Nova has been exceptional on the road this season, though, amassing a 3.32 ERA and 7-1 record in 12 away outings (Yankees 10-2).

MLB Odds Betting Trend: The Over is 7-0 over the last two years with Detroit playing as a home favorite in the first game of a series on a Monday while coming off a win.
