Best Meets Worst As Mariners Visit Angels, the Los Angeles Angels are currently the best team in baseball and are currently on a tear through the American League.

In mid July they swept the Boston Red Sox at home, then swept them again at Fenway Park to close out the month. Then over the weekend they swept the New York Yankees as well.

Heading into the series with the Seattle Mariners, the Angels were 24-9 in their last 33 games. Now they'll face the Seattle Mariners, the worst team in the American League, who are 7-14 in their last 21 games. Mariners vs Angeles Free MLB Prediction

Tuesday's pitching matchup will be between former Angel, Jarrod Washburn, against Jon Garland .

Washburn is on showcase right now and the Mariners are likely to trade him soon. He has been decent but unspectacular, which is basically the type of pitcher he has become since leading the Angels to the World Series early on in the decade.

He is 5-11 with a  4.76 ERA. July was his best month of the season (2-2, 2.67 ERA) but he has struggled so far in August. This month, he's given up nine earned runs in two starts, which have only last 10.2 innings. He's also walked seven batters in two starts after walking only seven in 33.2 innings of work in July.

He allows a lot of baserunners (1.48 WHIP) and is more of a flyball pitcher than a groundball pitcher, so if the flyballs find the alleys or leave the park, he gets into plenty of trouble.

He's started twice against the Angels this year and has lost both times. He's given up 19 hits, three walks and eight earned runs in 11.1 innings pitched.

Washburn will face Garland, who has very similar statistics to Washburn but clearly plays for a better team.

Garland has an ERA of 4.28 and a WHIP of 1.44. But he is a groundball pitcher, which helps him get out of trouble. The Angels have won four of his last six starts.

Garland pitches better at home but he receives better run support on the road. A perfect example is his last start where he pitched seven innings and allowed just three earned runs to the Baltimore Orioles but lost because the Angels offense failed to must a single run.

The Angels have provided just 3.14 runs per home start for Garland but have averaged six runs of offense for him on the road.
