Angels, Rays continue battle of heavyweights, it's feel awkward talking about the Tampa Bay Rays as a power player in the American League – or even the World Series picture – but the Rays refuse to go away. Wednesday's pitching matchup will pit Jered Weaver against Matt Garza. Weaver is 10-9 with a 4.47 ERA and is mostly just an innings eater. With an ERA like that, the Angels are happy if he gives them six solid innings of work every fifth day. That's been a bit of challenge for him, particularly on the road. He's 5-5 away from home with a 4.87 ERA. Opposing batters are hitting .273 against him opposed to .245 when he pitches at home. But Weaver has been a bit better on the road of late. In his last six road starts, he's given up 16 earned runs in 33.1 innings pitched but six of those runs came in a five-inning outing against the New York Yankees. Weaver will face Garza, who has had an up-and-down month so far. Garza started off August by coughing up nine earned runs in 10.2 innings pitched but threw a complete game shutout against the Texas Rangers last Friday. He's been very reliable at home posting a 6-2 record with a 2.47 ERA when he pitches at Tropicana Field. Opposing batters are hitting just .225 off him at home and he's only given up two home runs there versus 12 on the road. The Rays are just finding ways to win right now so stick with the hot team.
