Edinson Volquez has been everything that the Reds hoped for and more when they traded Josh Hamilton for him in the offseason. Volquez lead the team in wins, ERA and strikeouts and is the only starting pitcher on the staff with a record better than one game above .500. 
But as strong as he's been this season, Volquez has faded a little bit since the All-Star break. Considering it is his first year as a starter, this can sometimes be expected as fatigue kicks in from so many innings pitched.
Before the All-Star break, Volquez started 19 games and was 12-3 in those games. He posted an ERA of 2.30 and a WHIP of 1.25. Opposing batters hit just .214 against him.
But after the break, Volquez has been a different pitcher. All of his stats have declined. In the six starts after the break, he is 3-2 with a 4.24 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP and opposing hitters are batting .284.
Even so, the Reds have won three of his last four starts.
Volquez will face Aaron Cook, who has easily been the Rockies most effective pitcher this year. The Rockies have won 17 games, which means that roughly 30% of the teams wins have come when he's been on the mound.
But they are just 3-4 in his last seven outings as he too has started to fade. Before the All-Star break, he was 11-6 in his 20 starts with a 3.57 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. After the break, he's 4-2 with a 4.93 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.
Cook is 1-0 against the Rockies this season pitching eight innings and allowing one earned run in his start on July 25th.
