The Yankees had yesterday off, but they may have desired to keep playing after Sunday’s series finale with the Angels. New York topped the Halos 6-5 in Anaheim, snapping a five game losing streak. The victory closed out an arduous West Coast road swing that saw the club go 4-6 and lose ground to both the Red Sox and Orioles in the AL East race.

The Yankees, a 19-13 home team, will look to build on Sunday’s result with the inconsistent Phil Hughes toeing the rubber. Hughes is 3-5 with a 4.89 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, and, as those numbers would suggest, he is capable of producing both exceptional and exceptionally ugly performances. His latest outing qualified as the latter as he yielded four hits and three earned runs over 4.1 innings in a 2-5 loss at Oakland.

Hughes turned in his best showing of the season prior to the loss to Oakland, though, giving up three hits and no runs over seven innings in a 6-1 win against the Mariners. The California native typically struggles at home; he owns a 1-3 record and 6.52 ERA in six appearances at Yankee Stadium this season.

The 29-39 Dodgers, who lost for the sixth time in eight games on Sunday, will counter Hughes with rookie sensation Hyun-Jin Ryu. Ryu is 6-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 13 starts and he notched his fourth consecutive quality start his last time out, despite giving up 11 hits over six innings in a 6-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. This evening will mark the left handed Ryu’s seventh road start of the season; he is 2-1 with a 4.10 ERA in his six previous road outings (Dodgers went 3-3 in those six games).

Oakland, meanwhile, rolls into tonight’s contest having won 11 of its last 16 games to improve to 42-29 overall. The Athletics, who own a three game lead over the Rangers in the AL West standings, avoided their own sweep last night, though, taking out the Mariners 10-2 at the O.co Coliseum.

Getting the call for Texas tonight is 24 year old right hander Nick Tepesch. Tepesch owns a 4.30 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 12 starts this season; however, while those numbers are modest, the Rangers have been abysmal with Tepesch on the hill. Texas is 1-7 in his last eight starts and it averaged just 1.7 runs per game in the seven losses.

The Athletics will look to keep the Rangers in a tailspin with their own 24 year old righty, Dan Straily, on the hill. Straily’s 4.45 ERA and 1.07 WHIP are similar to Tepesch’s totals, but Oakland has experienced great success when Straily toes the rubber. The A’s, who have won Straily’s last five starts, are 8-2 in the California native’s 10 appearances this season.

The South Korean now owns a 2.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 6-2 record in 13 starts. Ryu, who has 75 strikeouts in 85.1 innings of work, also notched a complete game performance on May 28th when he held the Angels to two hits and no runs over nine innings.

The Rangers (38-27, 19-10 H) look to rebound after dropping two of three to visiting Cleveland. They are coming off Wednesday’s 5-2 loss. Leonys Martin homered and Jurickson Profar collected three hits for the Rangers, who have dropped five of seven games and sit one game behind Oakland for the AL West lead. The Dodgers (25-33, 16-16 H) lost to San Diego 6-2 on Wednesday. The Dodgers were denied the series sweep, the chance to match their longest winning streak of the season and the chance to move out of fifth place in the National League West for the first time since May 4. Rookie sensation Yasiel Puig went quietly in his three at-bats against Marquis. He grounded out twice then struck out for the first time in his career in the sixth inning. He struck out looking in the eighth inning against Dale Thayer to finish 0 for 4, lowering his batting average to .417.

RHP Zack Greinke (2-1, 4.80) allowed a home run through 5 1/3 innings of a 3-1 victory over Washington on May 15 in his return from missing more than a month with a broken collarbone.
