The Texas Longhorns are on the road tonight to open their conference season against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock. The in-state showdown is scheduled to tip off at 7:00pm ET at the United Spirit Arena; the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2. College Basketball Odds have the 12th ranked Longhorns listed as a -7 against the spread road favorite and the game total set at 147.5.
Texas saw its six game win streak come to
an end last Saturday with an 82-81 loss to Connecticut at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. The Longhorns hit 45.6 percent of their field goal attempts compared to the Huskies 38.1 percent; however, UConn got off 16 more shots than Texas in the overtime thriller.
The Huskies also took advantage of their charity stripe opportunities, cashing in on 12 of their 14 free throw attempts, while the Longhorns missed 14-of-23 foul shots.
Texas, which had five players in double figures, got 20 points apiece from leading scorer Jordan Hamilton and reserve guard J'Covan Brown in the loss. Hamilton also led the Longhorns on the glass with 11 rebounds, but Texas still got worked on the boards as UConn grabbed 48 rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end (Texas 38, 10 respectively).
The Longhorns, which have played six of their last seven games at home, are now 12-3 overall.
Texas Tech fell to 8-8 on the season with a 71-59 home loss to Baylor on Saturday. The Red Raiders, which had won back to back games against Texas A&M -CC and Delaware State before opening their conference season, had difficulty containing the Bears' LaceDarius Dunn and Perry Jones.
Dunn scored 20 points after hitting four three pointers while Jones also produced 20 on 8-of-9 shooting. Texas Tech got 14 points from reserve John Roberson and 12 from forward Mike Singletary. Singletary, who leads the Red Raiders in scoring, had a horrible shooting day, though, connecting on just 2-of-12 from the floor.
It is still early, but Texas Tech is the only team in the Big 12 that does not own a winning record. The Red Raiders should expect to become the only team in the Big 12 with a losing record after tonight. Tech has lost nine of its last 10 games against the Longhorns.
