The Suns welcome the Pacific Division leading Clippers to Phoenix tonight for a rivalry tilt at the US Airways Center. This evening’s divisional showdown between Los Angeles and Phoenix is scheduled for a 10:30pm ET start on ESPN. The Clippers recent inconsistent play (4-4 last eight games) has put their Pacific lead in jeopardy; however, they still maintain a one game lead on the rival Lakers thanks to last night’s win over Sacramento.
Los Angeles, taking part in its first post-All Star game contest, beat the Kings 108-100 at the Power Balance Pavilion after a tremendous long range effort. The Clippers, which hit 47.8 percent from the field, dropped 12 of their 23 three point attempts. Leading the way were reserves Bobby Simmons and Mo Williams, who combined to hit 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Chris Paul led all Clippers with 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting while Randy Foye and Blake Griffin scored 16 and 14 points respectively.
Phoenix currently sits fourth in the Pacific standings with a 15-20 record, but the Suns have played better basketball of late. Steve Nash and company won for the third time in their last four games last night with a 104-95 triumph over the Timberwolves at the US Airways Center.
Six Phoenix starters reached double figures in the win, including veteran Grant Hill, who dropped a season high 20 points to lead the team. Nash posted the Suns only double-double as he scored 13 points and handed out 17 assists.
The Suns, who are not known for their defense, limited Minnesota to 39.5 percent field goal shooting, which included a 1-for-13 effort from three point range.
While the Clippers are favored in tonight’s game, their recent history against Phoenix is not a good one. The Suns have won nine of the last 10 in this divisional series, but the two teams have not played since April of last year.
