Georgetown vs Belmont 2012 NCAA Bracket Predictions

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

georgetown jason clarkGeorgetown, which is hoping to avoid its third straight opening round loss, will square off against Atlantic Sun champion Belmont on Friday at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Hoyas, the three seed in the Midwest Region, and Bruins are scheduled to tip off at 3:10pm ET on TruTV. 2012 NCAA Bracket Predictions have Georgetown listed as a -4 against the spread favorite; the Over/Under is set at 133.5 points.

While Belmont is certainly the lesser known of these two programs, it should not be dismissed. The Bruins have not played the most daunting conference schedule, but they did manage to cruise through it with a 16-2 record. They also won three straight games to capture the Atlantic Sun Tournament title and an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

More importantly, Belmont, which faced Duke and Memphis to open the season (lost both games), rides a 14 game win streak in to Friday’s game. The Bruins confidence is probably at a season high and their ability on the offensive end of the floor could pose some serious problems for the Hoyas.

Belmont ranks fourth in the nation in points per game (81.5) and the team is connecting on 37.8 percent of its three point attempts. The Bruins have four players that average double figures in scoring, and two of those individuals, Ian Clark and Drew Hanlan, are hitting over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Georgetown put together a wonderful regular season, going 22-7 overall and 12-6 in Big East play, but it has lost three of its last six games. There is no doubt, however, that the Hoyas are the more battle tested, physical squad in this match-up.

In addition to its Big East slate, Georgetown has faced teams tournament teams in Kansas, Memphis (twice), and Alabama. Suffice it to say that Belmont’s athleticism will not put a jolt of fear in the Hoyas. However, if John Thompson III’s crew fails to guard the perimeter, another first round loss is anything but far-fetched. The Bruins, as mentioned, are no joke from the outside, and if they get hot the number in front of the opposition means little.
