Eleven seeds USC and Virginia Commonwealth will conclude the first round of NCAA Tournament action with a Wednesday evening dust up at the University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio. The game between the two schools is scheduled to tip off at 9:00pm ET on truTV. NCAA Basketball Odds have the Trojans listed as a -4.5 college basketball picks favorite; the game total is set at 160.
USC closed out the regular season in
strong fashion, winning five of its final six games before a first round meeting with Cal in the Pac 10 Tournament. The Trojans beat the Bears 70-56 to improve to 19-13 overall and secure a spot in the NCAA's.
USC fell to No. 15 Arizona 62-67 in the tournament semifinals, despite the efforts of Nikola Vucevic, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Marcus Simmons, who produced 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
Vucevic leads USC in both scoring and rebounding; the 6' 10" junior is averaging 17.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
VCU fell to Old Dominion in the final of the Colonial Athletic Conference Tournament (65-70), but the Rams, who finished fourth in the league with a 12-6 record, found their way to the Big Dance as a result of their 23 wins.
VCU beat Old Dominion and UCLA in the regular season and it scored a 79-63 win over George Mason in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
The Rams are led in scoring by senior forward Jamie Skeen (15.3 ppg), who played his first two seasons of college basketball at Wake Forest. Bradford Burgess (14 ppg), who scored a team high 19 points in VCU's championship loss to Old Dominion, and Brandon Rozzell (11.3 ppg) also averaged double figures in scoring this season.
The winner of this game will meet the Georgetown Bulldogs, the sixth seed in the Southwest Region, on Friday night in Chicago.
