Harvard vs Vanderbilt 2012 NCAA Bracket Predictions

by Reno Gold on Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Harvard takes on Vanderbilt in the Big DanceHarvard vs Vanderbilt 2012 NCAA Bracket Predictions:  The Vanderbilt Commodores men’s basketball team pulled off a huge upset of No. 1 Kentucky in the SEC tournament finals in New Orleans last Sunday to secure its first SEC championship since 1951. The win got Vandy a No. 5 seed in the 2012 Men’s NCAA Tournament East Regional to play the 12th seeded Harvard Crimson of Ivy League at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. Thursday, March 15 with tip-off on CBS set for approximately 4:40 p.m. ET.

Oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv list the Commodores as 5 1/2-chalk favorites versus the Crimson with a combined score (over/under) total of 123 1/2. Harvard backers are getting +190 College Basketball Odds on the off shore money line while the price of a SU Vandy win is -230 ($230 wager to win $100).

According to SEC commentator Chris Dortch at SEC.com, this match-up is right in Vanderbilt’s danger zone. A 12 seed over a 5 seed has historically been one of the most common upsets in the tournament. And the teams that bumped the ‘Dores out of the first round in their last three tournament appearances were seeded 13th (Siena, 2008), 13th (Murray State, 2010) and 12th (Richmond, 2011).

Harvard is having a season for the ages. Crimson backers have not seen their team in the NCAA tournament since 1946. Harvard has set a school record with 26 victories this season. The Crimson was awarded the Ivy League’s automatic bid by winning the Ancient Eight’s regular season title with a 12-2 record, one game ahead of Penn’s 11-3 mark. This will be Harvard’s second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history.

The Commodores have had terrible luck in the tournament in recent years but 2012 should be the year they play deep into the field. My Pick – Vanderbilt -5 1/2.
