The Orange wasted no time in knocking off Vermont, 79-56, and Gonzaga, 87-65, to start their 2010 NCAA title run. Coach Jim Boeheim has done a tremendous job of managing personnel to help fill some of the voids. This was evident during the Orange’s game against the Bulldogs, when his front line struggled with foul trouble.
“You know, there’s no question DaShonte (Riley) did a tremendous job today. But there’s no question that when we don’t have Arinze, we’re just — we’re a different team,” Boeheim admitted to the media. “We’re a different team. When they have big guys like this, those 41 points they got inside would have never happened. He doesn’t allow that to happen. He controls that paint area.”
The Orange will be taking on Butler in the Regional Semifinals, with a potential showdown Kansas State in the Elite Eight. Whether Onuaku will be ready to go this weekend remains a question mark. The last time Syracuse and the Butler Bulldogs faced off dates all the way back to March of 2002, when Syracuse espaced with a 66-65 victory.
“In the tournament, there is no changing. You have to do what you’ve been doing,” Boeheim added. “Butler — I’ve watched them play all year long. They’re one of the best teams I’ve seen all year. I’ve had them in the Top 10 in my poll from the very beginning of the year. I think they have a tremendous team. And so we’ll have our hands full.”
