College Basketball: Cincinnati at Xavier

by Steve Hastings on Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Two teams that have an extreme dislike for each other meet on Wednesday as Xavier hosts Cincinnati in a cross-town college basketball rivalry. Xavier is ranked #17 in the country and has not lost at home in nearly a year. The Musketeers trail the all-time series 47-27 but they have won 7 of the past 11 games between the two teams. SBG Global reports that early NCAA Basketball betting has the public taking Xavier at Home.

Neither team was ranked last season when the two teams met. Cincinnati won 67-57 last season and the game was the highlight of the season for the Bearcats. They finished 11-19 on the season, their worst finish in 23 years while Xavier finished 25-9. Cincinnati and Xavier have played at least once every year since 1945-46. Cincinnati has lost its last two trips to Cintas Center. Xavier has won 13 straight at home and has not lost since last December on their home court. This season they are pounding opponents at home, winning by an average of 31.8 points per game. The Musketeers are looking for their best start to a season in over 10 years.

Xavier has a balanced attack with six players averaging double-digits. "On any particular night, we have different players who are capable of having a big night," head coach Sean Miller said. "It's not always six players in double figures. It's the ability of a lot of players to have a big game." Senior guard Drew Lavender had 28 points and had a career-best 10 assists in Xavier’s 79-66 win over Creighton on Dec. 5. "He was the first option," said B.J. Raymond, "It shows you how good he is. It's hard to find a point guard who can score, who can run the team, take on the press. Basically, he does all the work." Xavier is the best team in the Atlantic 10 in shooting.

Cincinnati is 4-4 but their four wins have come against weak opponents. The Bearcats lost at Illinois State on Saturday 62-52. They only shot 36.7 percent for the game. Cincinnati is having trouble shooting this season as they rank 15th in both field-goal percentage (41.8) and 3-point percentage (30.8). They are last in points per game (65.8) in the conference.
