Last year’s meeting between Ohio State and Michigan State, a game the Spartans won 10-7 at the Horseshoe, must still be lingering in the minds of the odds makers. The two rivals are slated to meet this Saturday (3:30pm ET, ABC) and Michigan State has been installed as a -3 pick against the spread home favorite. The latest College Football Odds have the game total in this Big Ten clash set at 43.5 points; both the Over and Under are drawing -110 odds.
A Kirk Cousins led Michigan State squad marched into Columbus last year and snapped a seven game losing streak to Ohio State by recording a 10-7 victory. As the score would indicate, it was the Spartans defense that was most responsible for the win as it held the Buckeyes to 12 first downs and 178 total yards. Quarterback Braxton Miller, who split time with Joe Bauserman under center, completed 5-of-10 passes for 56 yards and one interception.
Miller and the Buckeyes will again have to contend with a stout Spartan defense. Michigan State currently ranks sixth in the FBS in yards per game allowed (233.5) and 11th in points per game allowed at 11.8. That said, this year’s Ohio State team, which is under the direction of two time National Championship winner Urban Meyer, looks better equipped to move the ball against the Spartans.
The 4-0 Buckeyes are averaged nearly 38 points per contest in wins over Miami (OH), Central Florida, California, and UAB while Miller is over half to his passing yardage (754 to 1159) and passing touchdowns (seven to 13) totals from last season. The sophomore signal caller already has matched his rushing touchdown total from last year (seven) and he is averaging over two yards per carry than he did a season ago.
Conversely, the Spartans, who come in with a 3-1 record thanks to a 20-3 home loss to Notre Dame, are averaging 10 fewer points and 24 fewer pass yards per game than they did last season.
This year’s game seemingly has all the makings of another defensive struggle as only one Michigan State game has totaled more than 30 points this season; however, it is unlikely the two rivals post fewer points than the 17 they did last year.
Michigan State Betting Trend: The Under is 15-3 over the last five years when the Spartans played as a home favorite coming off a win.
