Tennessee vs Georgia Pick Against the Spread

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Georgia Bulldog Mark RichtTennessee and Georgia will attempt to clear up the SEC East picture this Saturday (3:30pm ET, CBS) when they collide at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The weekend’s meeting between the Volunteers and Bulldogs could muddy the picture as well should Tennessee find a way to slip past No. 5 Georgia. The latest College Football Odds like the Bulldogs to get the job done, though, as they are listed as a -13 pick against the spread home favorite.

With 19 starters and 49 letter men returning to Knoxville this off-season some felt Tennessee and its beleaguered head coach Derek Dooley had an opportunity to contend for the SEC East title. Those prognostications suffered a major blow on September 15th when the Florida Gators, playing as a three point road dog, knocked off the Volunteers 37-20 at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee did recover from their loss to the Gators with a 47-26 win over Akron, but it led the Zips just 30-26 early in the fourth quarter. Now it has an opportunity to build on its late surge against Akron and, potentially, remove some of the sting from its loss to Florida with a win over the Bulldogs.

Unfortunately for the Volunteers, it would appear Georgia is building steam after its lackluster opening against Buffalo (won 45-23 as a 38 point favorite). The Bulldogs smashed Missouri 41-20 on the road in week two and they outscored Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt 104-23 the last two weeks.

Georgia has also controlled this series of late, winning three of the last four, including the last two against Dooley coached Volunteer teams. The Bulldogs defeated Tennessee 41-14 at Sanford Stadium in 2010, Dooley’s first year at the school, and they took out the Volunteers 20-12 last year in Knoxville; Georgia covered the spread on each occasion.

Things to consider: The Over is 5-1 in Georgia’s last six games as a home favorite with a total of 54.5 or more. The Bulldogs were 6-0 straight up and 4-2 against the spread in those games.
