Longtime rivals Stanford and Notre Dame are scheduled to meet for the 27th time when they hook up at Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday. Start time in this weekend’s top 25 clash between the Cardinal and Fighting Irish is set at 3:30pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on NBC. The latest College Football Odds have No. 7 Notre Dame listed as a -7.5 pick against the spread home favorite and the game total set at 44 points.
Stanford nearly opened its season with a loss to a sneaky good San Jose State team, but they did manage to prevail 20-17. The team followed up its narrow escape against the Spartans with a 50-13 win over Duke and a huge 21-14 upset of then No. 2 USC.
Like many teams do, the Cardinal experienced a letdown after their unexpected conference victory as they lost their next contest, a Thursday night meeting with Pac-12 North rival Washington, 17-13. Stanford experienced another emotional swing after the Huskies and it almost bit the team last weekend against Arizona. The Cardinal needed a late rally to nip the Wildcats 54-48 in overtime.
So after its schizophrenic 4-1 start Stanford will travel to South Bend to face a Notre Dame team that has been, for the most part, the definition of consistency. The 5-0 Irish have experienced some up and down offensive moments but their defense has been in dominant form all season long.
Notre Dame ranks second in the nation in points per game allowed at 7.8 and it sits 13th in yards per game allowed with a 290 average. The Fighting Irish have been in lock down mode their last three games, yielding just 12 points to Michigan State, Michigan, and Miami (FL).
While Stanford’s offense broke out last week against Arizona it will not do so against Notre Dame. Conversely, the Irish will probably have difficulty finding the end zone against a Cardinal defense that had allowed a total of 51 points on the season prior to last Saturday’s shootout with the Wildcats.
Stanford has won its last three meetings with the Irish; however, this weekend’s contest appears as though it is Notre Dame’s to lose. The Irish, who won seven in a row against the Cardinal between 2002 and 2008, own a 17-9 advantage in the series.
