Texas vs Oklahoma Pick Against the Spread

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

red river rivalryThe Red River Rivalry will be renewed this weekend when Texas and Oklahoma lock horns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The two bitter adversaries are scheduled to kick things off at 12:00pm ET on Saturday, October 13th; the game will be broadcast live on ABC. College football odds have the Sooners listed as a -3 pick against the spread favorite while the Over/Under is set at 60.5 points.

Despite being 3-1, Oklahoma’s 2012 season has gone anything but according to plan. The Sooners were expected to be 4-0 at this juncture, but a 24-19 home loss to Kansas State potentially derailed the team’s Big 12 title and national championship hopes.

Fortunately for Oklahoma, it recovered from its loss to the Wildcats with a 41-20 road win at Texas Tech. The Sooners played more like the team most envisioned by posting 22 first downs and 380 total yards while quarterback Landry Jones completed 25-of-40 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Oklahoma’s defense also played well, picking off three passes while limiting the Red Raiders to 89 rush yards on 32 carries for a 2.8 yards per carry average.

While Oklahoma saw its conference title aspirations get a slight boost last weekend, Texas’ shot at a Big 12 Championship took a major hit with a 48-45 home loss to West Virginia. The Longhorns defense held the Mountaineers offense 110 yards below its season average, but it did not do enough to get the win as Geno Smith threw for 268 yards and four touchdowns.

Despite the loss, this year’s Texas team appears to be far better than either the 2010 or 2011 squads. Of course, it can go a long way toward proving that to be true by knocking off the Sooners this weekend. The Longhorns lost 28-20 to Oklahoma two years ago and they got drilled 55-17 by the Sooners last season. Texas had won four of five in the series prior to the two most recent meetings.

The Longhorns own a 52-39 advantage in this storied rivalry, but Oklahoma has won eight of the last 12 games.
