The undefeated Florida Gators will look to remain perfect this weekend when they meet SEC East rival Georgia at Everbank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. No. 2 Florida is presently listed as a -6.5 pick against the spread favorite in Saturday’s renewal of “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”; the latest College Football Odds have the game total set at 48.5 points. This weekend’s meeting between the Gators and Bulldogs is scheduled to get underway at 3:30pm ET on CBS.
A few weeks back Georgia may have been favored in this contest, but a 35-7 beating at South Carolina and a lackluster showing against a dreadful Kentucky team has assured the Dawgs an underdog role. Of course, Florida’s play has played a hand in the line as well.
The Gators roll into this annual showdown with a perfect 7-0 record and they have been more impressive with each passing week. Since its 20-17 week two win at Texas A&M, Florida has defeated its opposition, a list which includes Tennessee, LSU, and South Carolina, by an average of 24 points per game.
The Gamecocks served as the Gators latest victim as they clipped their division rival 44-11 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium over the weekend. Florida managed just 183 total yards in the game, but it held South Carolina to 191 yards and forced four Gamecock turnovers.
Those numbers do not bode well for the Bulldogs, who, despite some lofty point totals, have experienced some offensive struggles this season. When Georgia played South Carolina earlier this month it tallied a mere 15 first downs and 224 yards. The Bulldogs also had difficulty moving the ball at Missouri where they totaled 355 yards and averaged 3.2 yards per carry.
It is not hard to envision Florida, which features the nation’s fourth ranked scoring defense (12.1 points per game allowed) and seventh ranked total defense (282 yards per game allowed), shutting down Aaron Murray and company on Saturday. Conversely, while the Gators are not exactly an offensive juggernaut, they have already faced and experienced success against at least two defenses (LSU and South Carolina) that are better than the one they will see this weekend.
The Gators are 8-2 straight up and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 meetings with the Bulldogs. Florida is also 5-1 both straight up and against the spread playing as a favorite with a spread between 4 and 7.5 points and a total between 47.5 and 51 points.
