The biggest and most anticipated match up of the college football season will take place this weekend as No. 1 Alabama squares off against No. 5 LSU in a rematch of last season’s BCS National Championship Game. The two SEC West rivals are scheduled to kickoff at 8:00pm ET at Tigers Stadium in Baton Rouge on Saturday; the game will be broadcast live on CBS. The latest College Football Odds are favoring the Crimson Tide as a -9.5 pick against the spread favorite. This weekend’s game total is set at 42 points.
Alabama’s perfect run continued last weekend with a 38-7 victory over then No. 11 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs represented the Crimson Tide’s first ranked opponent since they took out Michigan in the season opener.
Now Alabama takes a huge step up in competition against a battle tested Tigers squad. LSU, which is 18-0 in its last 18 home games, owns a 7-1 record and it has faced some of the nation’s best teams in Florida, South Carolina, and Texas A&M. Conversely, the Tide have feasted on middling SEC teams, beating Arkansas, Ole Miss, Missouri, and Tennessee.
The Tigers are also seeking revenge in this contest as Alabama spoiled their perfect season and prevented an LSU national championship with a 21-0 win in last season’s BCS championship game. The Crimson Tide held the Tigers to five first downs and 92 yards in their January clash, and they limited LSU’s rushing attack, which averaged over 200 yards per game last season, to 39 yards on 27 attempts.
Alabama features largely new personnel on the defensive side of the ball, but they are still the nation’s top unit, limiting their opposition to an average of 203.1 yards and 8.1 points per game. Still, this game will not be a repeat of the national championship game. LSU is capable of limiting the Crimson Tide offensive attack and Tigers Stadium on a Saturday night is, arguably, the greatest home field advantage in all of college football. In other words, this is a test this Alabama team has yet to face, and it seems unlikely they will pass it with flying colors.
College Football Betting Trend: The Under is 9-1 in Alabama’s last 10 games as a favorite with a total between 41.5 and 44 points.
