Reigning national champion Alabama will face what appears to be its second most difficult test of the season this weekend when it meets SEC newcomer Texas A&M at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The two traditional powerhouses are scheduled to kick off at 3:30pm ET on Saturday on CBS. College Football Odds are anticipating a Crimson Tide victory with Nick Saban’s crew listed as a -14 against the spread home favorite; the game total is set at 56.5 points.
Alabama marched to its 7-0 record with the greatest of ease, whipping its first seven opponents by an average of 32.7 points per game; however, the Crimson Tide’s relatively soft schedule had many believing an undefeated Mississippi State might avoid embarrassment when the two teams locked horns on October 27th. Despite that sentiment, the Bulldogs were not up for the challenge as Alabama rolled to a 38-7 victory.
Last weekend presented a challenge the Crimson Tide had yet to face, though. LSU fought like heck to preserve its extended home winning streak and it nearly succeeded in its effort. Alabama, which was out-gained 435 yards to 331 and converted just one of its nine third down opportunities against LSU, needed a late touchdown to secure a 21-17 win over the Tigers.
Now the Tide face another challenge in a Texas A&M team that has significantly out-performed expectations this season. The 15th ranked Aggies are 7-2 overall and 4-2 in SEC play and their two losses, which came against Florida and LSU, were by a combined eight points despite them finishing -5 in turnover margin.
Texas A&M, without question, represents the most potent offensive threat Alabama has encountered thus far (ranks fourth in scoring and fifth in total offense) and it had success moving the ball against the aforementioned Gators and Tigers (rank fifth and third in total defense, respectively).
The Aggies are undefeated in road play this season, going 5-0 away from home, but they did have close calls against Ole Miss (30-27) and Louisiana Tech (59-57). However, A&M cruised to easy wins its last two road outings, beating Auburn 63-21 on October 27th and Mississippi State 38-13 last weekend.
College Football Odds Betting Trend: Alabama is 9-1 straight up but 2-8 against the spread in its last 10 games as a home favorite with a spread between 14 and 17.5 points.
