College football’s greatest rivalry will not look like much of a rivalry at all if the odds maker’s at SportsBettingOnline.ag are correct. According the latest college football odds release from the offshore bookmaker, No. 3 Ohio State is a -14.5 pick against the spread road favorite in its showdown with Michigan this weekend. The Wolverines will get their shot to prove the prognosticators wrong when the two teams kick things off at 12:00pm ET on Saturday at the Big House in Ann Arbor; the game will be broadcast live on ABC.
No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes vs Michigan Wolverines (+14.5, Over/Under 58): Ohio State has yet to lose a game under Urban Meyer and it looks as though it will keep that streak intact for at least one more weekend. Only three teams (Wisconsin, Northwestern, Iowa) have challenged the Buckeyes this season, but has been a while since anyone game them much to worry about.
Ohio State has absolutely crushed its last four opponents, topping Penn State, Purdue, Illinois, and Indiana by an average of 39.5 points per game, and that probably spells trouble for Michigan. The Buckeyes are all about style points at this juncture since their weak schedule has provided little in the way of substance. And, frankly, right now the Wolverines are playing like a potential blowout candidate.
Michigan got off to a 5-0 start, but there were signs of trouble even then with narrow wins over Akron and Connecticut serving a big red flags. The Wolverines have since dropped four of six games, including one at the Big House to an inconsistent Nebraska team.
Michigan’s last good performance came on October 5th when it beat a better than advertised Minnesota team. The Wolverines converted 10-of-13 on third down and averaged 13.8 yards per pass in besting the Gophers 42-13 in Ann Arbor. Minnesota also aided Michigan’s cause by finishing -2 in turnover margin. Barring another performance like that, coupled with a few gifts from the Buckeyes, Saturday’s game, rivalry or no, probably gets ugly.
Notable Trends: Ohio State is 7-0 straight up and 5-2 against the spread in its last seven games as a road favorite with a total of 54.5 or more points. Michigan is 0-5 both straight up and against the spread in its last five games as a home dog against a Big Ten opponent.
