orange bowl logoThe 2014 Discover Orange Bowl will feature ACC Atlantic Division runner up Clemson taking on the Big Ten’s second place finisher, Ohio State. The two teams, who are ranked No. 12 and No. 7 respectively, will do battle at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida on Friday, January 3rd; the game is schedule to kickoff at 8:30pm ET on ESPN. The opening Orange Bowl Betting Line 2014 from Sportsbook.ag has the Buckeyes listed as a -2.5 against the spread favorite and a -130 college football odds money line selection.

No. 12 Clemson Tigers vs No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes Odds (-2.5): Ohio State must find a way to do something it has never done under Urban Meyer, which is recover from a loss. Fortunately for Meyer and his troops, they will have plenty of time to digest their crushing Big Ten Championship defeat and turn their attention toward Clemson.

Ohio State may find encouragement in examining the Tigers schedule as Clemson had its share of difficulties dealing with ranked teams. Tajh Boyd and company opened the season with an impressive 38-35 home win over Georgia, but they got blitzed on October 19th by Florida State, falling 14-51 to its divisional rival, and they closed out their regular season schedule with a 17-31 loss at South Carolina. The Tigers allowed 72 first downs, 1428 total yards and finished -8 in turnover margin in those three games.

Given those numbers, it would hardly be shocking if Ohio State’s offense, which is averaging 518.5 yards and 46.3 points per game, finds some success against Clemson’s defense in the Orange Bowl. The Buckeyes were not as explosive against the better teams they faced, but they still put 31 points on Wisconsin and 34 points on Iowa, two teams which rank fifth and 11th in points per game allowed nationally, and they rushed for 273 yards on 40 carries against Michigan State’s top ranked run defense in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Finding motivation may be Ohio State’s most difficult challenge, but with kickoff still a few weeks away, Meyer, who owns a 7-1 bowl record, will have plenty of time to espouse the merits of an Orange Bowl victory.

Notable Trends: Clemson is 1-6 both straight up and against the spread in its last seven games as an underdog with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points.
