Cotton Bowl Betting Line 2014

by Matt Foust on Saturday, December 14th, 2013

cotton bowl logoNo. 8 Missouri will face a familiar foe when it takes the field at AT&T Stadium for the 2014 Cotton Bowl. Former Big 12 rival Oklahoma State will be the Tigers adversary, which should make for both an entertaining and competitive game. The Cowboys and Tigers are schedule to kick things off at 7:30pm ET on Friday, January 3rd; their postseason meeting will be broadcast live on FOX. The opening Cotton Bowl Betting Line 2014 has Mizzou listed as a slight -1.5 college football odds favorite.

No. 13 Oklahoma State Cowboys vs No. 8 Missouri Tigers Odds (-1.5): Both of these teams enter this game off disappointing efforts as Missouri came up short in its SEC Championship showdown with Auburn and Oklahoma State lost out on a share of the Big 12 title and a BCS Bowl berth as a result of its Bedlam Series loss to Oklahoma. Still, they remain two of the better team in the country and their pairing means college football fans will be treated to a Cotton Bowl match-up that has some teeth.

If recent history holds true, Oklahoma State should garner its 11th win of the season on January 3rd. Since Mike Gundy (5-2 in bowl games) took over the Cowboys program, the Pokes are 3-1 against the Tigers and their last loss to Mizzou came in October of 2005. Oklahoma State extended its current winning streak over Pinkel’s crew to three games when the two teams hooked up in Columbia in 2011 with 45-24 victory.

This year’s Missouri squad looks better equipped to deal with Oklahoma State, though. The Tigers have played an incredibly difficult schedule, one that featured seven bowl teams, including second ranked Auburn and ninth ranked South Carolina, and they are a more balanced team. Missouri’s offense is capable of burning teams both on the ground and through the air and its defense, the performance against Auburn aside, applies pressure on the quarterback and does a serviceable job against the run.

Notable Trends: The Cowboys are 1-4 both straight up and against the spread in their last five games as an underdog with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points.
