Can No. 4 Washington punch its ticket to the CFP title game by handing No. 1 Alabama its first loss of the season? Not likely, especially according to the college football odds makers at offshore bookmaker Bovada. The latest Washington vs Alabama odds have the Crimson Tide lined as a -14 favorite in the 2016 Peach Bowl.
While that may seem like a lot of points for a 12-1 squad to be getting, it’s really not that big of a surprise. Alabama has virtually cruised its way to a 13-0 with only Mississippi staying within single digits of Nick Saban’s troops.
The Crimson Tide, who played the nation’s third most difficult schedule (TeamRankings.com), were dominant all season, but their defense was suffocating over the team’s last five games.
Alabama yielded a total of 36 points and 1026 yards (7.2 points and 205.2 yards per game allowed averages) in wins over LSU, Mississippi State, Chattanooga, Auburn and Florida.
Washington’s offense, which ranks fourth in the nation with a 44.5 points per game average, will provide a stiffer test than any of those squads; however, the Huskies have been shut down before.
Washington managed just 13 first downs and 276 total yards in a 26-13 November 13 loss to USC as quarterback Jake Browning completed just 17-of-36 for 259 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Trojans managed 21 first downs and 400 yards in the win.
That is the same USC squad that Alabama held to 194 total yards while rolling up 465 of its own in its 52-6 shellacking of the Trojans on September 4.
The 2016 Peach Bowl is scheduled to get underway at 2:00pm ET tomorrow at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta; the CFP semifinal will be broadcast live on ESPN.
