Oscar Odds Favorite Un Prophete for Best Foreign Film

by Rachel Quinn on Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Adding to the list of great movies out there, we can’t forget about the Best Foreign Film category.  Although I haven’t personally seen any of these films, they’ve been nominated for a chance to bring home the Oscar and that’s good enough for me.  You can get all of your current odds for your favorite Oscar nominees at BODOG.com.

Oscar Odds Favorite Un Prophete for Best Foreign FilmReceiving the best odds thus far for the Best Foreign Film is from France, Un Prophete, getting 8 to 5 odds.  The movie was written and directed by Jacques Audiard who portrays an illiterate young man that is sentenced to six years in prison in this French crime film.  Once he arrives in prison he joins the Corsican Mafia group where he is sent on missions to murder.  However, in the end the character that Tahar Rahim plays learns to read and write, and uses all of his intelligence to develop his own network to detach from his current group.

Also making the Best Foreign Film nomination list is a drama movie out of Israel, Ajami (7 to 1 odds).  Written and direct by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, the movie explores several different stories set in an actual impoverished Christian and Muslim Arab neighborhood.  This production hired non-pro actors to give the film a more documentary feel.  The film was the first predominantly Arabic-language film submitted by Israel for this category in the Oscars and will be looking to hopefully get the fullest recognition by winning the Academy Award.

Coming out of Argentina is a film, El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in their Eyes) and was based on the novel written by Eduardo Sacheri (The Question in their Eyes).  The Juan Jose Campanella production is a dramatic crime movie that is set in 1999 but is told in flashback form of a federal agent who becomes spellbound by an investigation of the crime of a young woman that is brutally raped and murdered inside her house.  At 8 to 1 odds, Argentina’s highest grossing film in 2009 will be looking to honor its country with an Oscar.
