With two movies getting so much attention, who will get the most Oscars in 2010? Avatar or The Hurt Locker? It seems as though that question would be a foregone conclusion with Avatar bringing in the most Oscar statues but people have been wrong before. You can get all of your current and best odds for the 2010 Oscars as well as Avatar’s 2 to 7 odds for Most Awards at BODOG.com.
Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar has been a true success for him grossing in a record breaking $2 billion. Development of the sci-fi epic film began in 1994 when Cameron wrote an 80-page script for it. Filming then was supposed to start after the director completed Titanic but unfortunately the technology was not yet up to par to truly bring out his vision for the movie. With more time on his hands to add to the greatness of Avatar, Cameron then began to work in 2005/2006 on the authentic language for the extraterrestrial beings that would be the stars of the production as well as the fictional universe that would be the amazing backdrop for the film.
Starring in the roles of these extraterrestrial beings are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriquez and Stephen Lang who belong to a local tribe of Na’vi – a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora in the year 2154. Avatar has broken many box office records during its release and has already received many awards. With nine nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, James Cameron is hoping to add many more to his already extensive award shelf.
The Hurt Locker has been getting a lot of Oscar buzz as well and also happens to have been directed by James Cameron’s ex wife, Kathryn Bigelow. The American war thriller that was filmed in Jordan and Kuwait in 2007 was originally supposed to be on a limited release but was released widespread due to the success of the production. The film was written by a freelance journalist, Mark Boal, who was embedded with an American bomb squad during the Iraq war. Boal then combined his experiences into a fictional retelling of real events and passed them on to Bigelow.
One actor that is finally getting some true movie success is Jeremy Renner who stars in The Hurt Locker as a United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team member during the Iraq War. Others starring in the movie are Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty who are also members of the EOD going around defusing bombs. The movie has already received many impressive awards but I’m sure all of the people involved with this film want to see many more added to that list. Just like Avatar, The Hurt Locker also has nine nominations at this year’s Oscars and comes in at 9 to 4 odds of taking home the most.
