It is the annual Fourth of July event everyone has been waiting for, the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. The 98th edition of the nitrate filled extravaganza is scheduled to get underway at 12:00pm ET on Thursday, July 4; it will be broadcast live on ESPN. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2013 Odds from offshore bookmaker Bovada.lv have competitive eater extraordinaire Joey Chestnut listed as a heavy -1000 moneyline favorite to win his seventh consecutive Yellow Mustard Belt. The Over/Under for total hot dogs eaten by the winner is presently set at 63.5.
Takeru Kobayashi was the most famous name in competitive eating thanks to his six consecutive Nathan’s Famous wins between 2001 and 2006. That title now belongs to Joey Chestnut, who ended Kobayashi’s Nathan’s run and started his own in 2007.
Last year Chestnut tied Kobayashi’s record of six straight wins at the Nathan’s contest and he did it by matching his own contest record of 68 hot dogs (and buns) consumed (10 minute time limit). Chestnut will stand alone in the Nathan’s record books with a win on Thursday, setting high marks for both contest wins and consecutive contest wins.
Over the last six years, Chestnut has averaged 62.8 hot dogs and buns in winning the contest. He topped this year’s posted Over/Under total in 2007 (66), 2009 (68), and 2012 (68).
The 29 year old Chestnut does not confine his eating mastery to just hot dogs. The California native also holds records for eating Pork Ribs, Asparagus, Chicken Wings, Steak, Matzoh Balls, Gyros, and Krystal burgers.
