Professional eater extraordinaire Joey Chestnut will look to continue his Coney Island reign tomorrow afternoon when he steps up to the table for the 99th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. The annual Fourth of July event, sanctioned by Major League Eating, is scheduled to get underway at 12:40 p.m. (ET); it will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 2:00 p.m. (ET). Opening Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2014 Odds from Bovada.lv have, as expected, Chestnut listed as a huge favorite to win the coveted Yellow Mustard Belt.
The California native is drawing a prohibitive -1200 line while last year’s second place finisher, Matt Stonie, is getting +900 odds. Stonie downed 51 hot dogs and buns in the 2013 contest.
The category ‘Any Other Eater’ (the field usually features about 20 contestants) is getting +700 odds while the Over/Under on total hot dogs eaten by the champion is set at 67.5.
Chestnut, who won a record seventh Yellow Mustard Belt in 2013, broke his own Nathan’s record last year, consuming 69 hot dogs and buns in the allotted 10 minute time. Chestnut’s face stuffing effort helped those wagering on the Over 63.5 hot dogs and buns cash their respective tickets.
The odds makers have responded to Chestnut’s eating exploits, but have they increased the total enough? Since Nathan’s changed the contest duration to 10 minutes back in 2008, Chestnut has averaged 63.3 hot dogs and buns per event. However, he has crested this year’s 67.5 total three times in the last six years.
