4th of July will be a yearly event for Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest out of Coney Island, New York but we’ll have to see who will be the one to devour the most hot dogs and buns to earn themselves the 2010 title. Last year’s winner, Joey Chestnut is the obvious favorite at -1000 odds. Now that it’s been reported that Takeru Kobayashi will no longer be in the competition due to a contract dispute with Major League Eating, 2009 3rd place finisher and +700 odds favorite Patrick Bertoletti just might have a chance to come through at this year’s contest. Adding to the favorites is 2009 4th place finisher, Tim “Eater X” James who is coming in at +800 odds.
"I wish people wouldn't associate me so much with hot dogs. They're one of my worst foods in competition. Probably a half dozen men in the world are better than me – lots better,” Sonya Thomas said. "But, Nathan's is the biggie. To paraphrase George Shea, IFOCE Chairman, 'What could be more American than eating Nathan's Hot Dogs on Coney Island on the 4th of July?' That about says it all. Just look at the crowds every year."
Two of the ladies at this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest will be giving the men a run for their money. One of the Asian persuasion ladies is South Korean Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas who is coming in at +2000 odds and will be going into the competition at 5’2 and 105 pounds. The 41 year old is a Burger King manager and assured her family back in her home country that even after competing in these sort of competitions – that her health is in check. Another woman who will be going into the competition for a win is 105 pound beauty salon owner Juliet Lee (+5000) who won Nathan’s Hot Dog qualifier in Fishkill on June 26th by scarfing down 28 ¼ hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Now the 44 year old will be going into the July 4th contest to out beat the men and bring home a win for the ladies.
"It doesn't matter what your body size is. It doesn't matter how small the person is. It matters how big their stomach is," Juliet Lee said. "I'm very excited. I knew I was going to win."
