The 96th annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is slated to get underway in just a few hours from now at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The Fourth of July culinary spectacular, which features renowed competitive eater Joey Chestnut gunning for his fifth consecutive Yellow Mustard Belt, will be broadcast live on ESPN at 12:00 PM ET. The latest Sports Betting Odds have Chestnut listed as a -600 moneyline favorite to win today's event. The Over/Under on the number of hot dogs Chestnut will consume is set at 60.5.
Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest was once ruled by Japan's Takeru Kobayashi, who won the event six times in a row from 2001 to 2006. Joey Chestnut wrested control of the hot dog situation back in 2007, though, and he has not faltered since.
Chestnut has made a mockery of almost every other contestant, with the exception of Kobayashi, the last four years, besting the third place finisher by an average of 14.5 hot dogs and buns.
Chestnut's total took a major dip last year as he recorded his lowest winning total yet with 54 hot dogs conusumed. But that is not a good indicator of how many weiners the California native might down this afternoon. In 2008 Chestnut's total fell into the 50's as well, but he bounced back in 2009 by polishing off a world record 68 hot dogs in the 10 minute time limit.
Kobayashi, who was banned from last year's event, will, once again, not be allowed to participate in the competition. His absence makes Chestnut a clear favorite, despite the presence of some Nathan's Famous regulars.
