Premier League Chelsea hosts Manchester United

by Steve Hastings on Friday, April 25th, 2008

The biggest match of the Premier League season takes place on Saturday as Chelsea hosts Manchester United. Each team will have two games remaining after Saturday’s match so it is a must-win for Chelsea considering they trail United by three points in the standings.  Even if Chelsea wins they will need United to stumble somewhere since United is well ahead in goal difference.   First things first though, Chelsea must win at home on Saturday to tie United in points.  There is also a very good chance that the teams will meet again in the final of the Champions League.  Both teams got road draws in their first legs and will be in prime position to win at home and advance to the Soccer Betting Champions League Final.  Chelsea played Liverpool to a 1-1 draw while United played to a scoreless draw at Barcelona. "It is incredible to think what can be won and lost," said Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, "It is an exciting time for everyone."

Since the game is so more important for Chelsea it is possible that United will rest some of their star players for Tuesday’s game against Barcelona.  Defender Nemanja Vidic is not likely to play on Saturday. "Nemanja went 36 hours without eating," manager Alex Ferguson said. "I don't think he'll be ready for Saturday.  Before training, he had very severe stomach pains, so we sent him off to a hospital only about a mile away."

Chelsea has no luxury of resting any players in advance of Wednesday’s match against Liverpool.  "United score the most goals in the league. They are an attacking threat," Cech said. "You know there will be work to do but it is great when you keep a clean sheet against such an attacking team. It would also be great to see them in Moscow, for many reasons. It is always an entertaining game and, in the final of the Champions League, with the passion of the English fans, it would be a great occasion." Chelsea has won three of the last four home matches against United with the other match ending in a draw.  Three of those four matches went under the total.

If United wins on Saturday against Chelsea they would clinch the Premier League title.  Third-place Arsenal plays on Monday against Derby but is really out of contention regardless of what happens on Saturday.
